　　今週の『ニューズウイーク』(2007年12月5日号)が面白い。
　カバーストーリーは《超格差社会》。これも面白いのだが、ここで取り上げたいのは「TokyoEye」という一頁のコラム。
レジス・アルノーというフランスのフィガロの記者が、日本にくる前は、日本はフランスやアメリカと同じようにアートへの情熱に満ちた場所だと思っていたが、実際に来てみると、日本の美術館は「空っぽ文化」の象徴でしかないと批判している。　
　「森美術館にサントリー美術館、国立新美術館・・・新しく生まれた施設が『美術館』と名乗るのは詐欺に等しい」と痛烈である。
日本では芸術家は「ブランド」とみられていて、「ピカソ・ブランド」「シャガール／ブランド」であって、そこには大切なものが欠けている。
　彼は美術館というのものには「リスクを背負いながらも自らの視点を貫いて作品を選ぶ目」が必要であると主張して、日本の美術館にはそれがないというのである。
日本にあるのはニセ美術館であって、芸術への愛が生んだものではないという。
芸術を愛するふりをしながら、自分では価値を判断しない日本人の二面性を問題にしているのである。
筆者は、まさに同感であって、このアートスタディーズが『名品とは何か？』と提起してきた視点というのは、まさにそうしたリスクを負った視線である。日本の近代絵画史の中で評価の高い黒田清輝を疑い、萬鉄五郎の作品を〈六流〉であると断じ、村山知義をシュビッターズと比較して、デザイン的合法表現似すぎないものと主張してきた。
　筆者が《超一流》から《四十一流》に至る格付けをしてきたのも、その作業である。
　また、たとえば野島康三の写真を〈超一流〉〈４１流〉〈超一流〉のレオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチ級の名品であると主張するのもまた、このリスクを背負って初めて顕現できる芸術への希求故のものである。
　筆者の目は、中学生から東京国立博物館で、国宝・重要文化財の作品を眼で暗記する作業が作ってきたものであって、その意味で日本文化の権威が教育した協同主観性である。にもかかわらす、あくまでも筆者の私的な感性と責任のリスクを負うことで成立する、芸術への愛と希求の物語なのである。
