朝日新聞社から出版の「皇居美術館空想」という本の図版決定の作業を、現在していて、
〈超一流〉の作品を日本美術全集を中心にして選ぶ作業をしている。

ところが〈超一流〉だけだと数が多すぎて本に収録できない。
そこで〈超一流〉〈超一流〉〈超一流〉という三段階の名品だけに絞り込むことにした。

つまりラカン用語で言えばその美術作品の〈象徴界〉〈想像界〉〈現実界〉の３界すべてで〈超一流〉に達している作品にしたのである。

そうすると驚くのは作品が、新たな見え方をしてくることである。
たとえば陶磁器には名品ものが、ほとんど無い。
ちょっと驚きである。
中国には陶磁器のもの凄い〈超一流〉〈超一流〉〈超一流〉のものが、
ざくざくとあるので、
その差は大きいものがあります。

武田友孝さんによると「家にあった新潮社・とんぼの本『国宝』を開いてみましたら、国産陶磁器の国宝はたった五点でした」

それにたいして、刀剣は、良いものがたくさんある。
「国宝全1619件の中で刀剣が122件」、
つまり日本刀は、日本の鑑賞美術を考えるときに非常に重要な領域なのです。

しかし日本刀は、分からないという人が多い。
しかし、それは馴れていないからで、
良いものを見れば、
すぐに善し悪しが分かるようになる。

古くは、皇室の血統における権威の証としての宝剣(草薙剣等)が、
魂に擬する形で尊ばれてきたという伝統がある。

美しい姿が「武士の魂」として象徴的な意味を持ち、
美術品としても評価の高い物が多いのです。

日本刀の美しさは、
平安時代後期‐鎌倉時代初期に既に海外の好事家などにも認められており、
輸出品の一つとされていたのです。

日本刀は諸外国の刀剣類と異なり、
外装品（拵え）とは別に、
刀身自体が美術的価値を発揮していることを以って最大の特徴であると言えます。
それは高度に抽象性と、高質性をもっています。

とは言っても、すぐれたものは、平安後期から、室町時代に限られています。
今回私の選んだものは、
私の選別は厳しくて、さらに厳選して14刀選んでいる、
名品中の名品です。
